MGB Engine what's this hole for?

#1 Post by Tasng4 »

Hi and thanks for looking.

I'm currently rebuilding my MGB 1800 18V engine and I've found a 'strange hole'. Does anyone know what it's for?

On the right side of the engine just below and right of the oil pressure take off and oil cooler hose there's a hole which was blanked off. I removed the closing bolt and found about an inch of dried carbon type stuff. I poked in the hole and dug out the gunk. I've put an air nozzle down the hole but it doesn't seem to go anywhere. At the moment I've left a little petrol on there in the hope it will soak it's way through.

Cylinder block drain plug for coolant .Some "B series" have a tap instead of a plug

Mmmm it was ABSOLUTELY blocked with gunk. I poked around with a piece of wire but all seemed blocked. Maybe 40 years of sediment.

Incidently, is there anywhere in the engines oil passages I can plug in a temperature sender unit? I want to fit an oil temperature gauge.

Thanks

You could use a T piece and take two capillaries from that to the gauges or are you already using a T piece for an extra warning lamp sender switch that you'll doubtless be using for a 20psi signal in a car that competes?

Not sure where you suggest I use a 'T' piece, in the oil cooler pipe? I hadn't thought about fitting a 20psi warning lamp. I'm not that serious about rallies, I don't do Le Jog etc.

Use the T piece in one of the oil gallery threaded holes that the sender switch would ordinarily be connected to on its own.

Like so:

Ah! I hadn't thought of that. I've bought one of these now --> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370850251415 so I can get the temperature and pressure switch from the same place.
