I got the dremmil out and cut the U bolt off, it only took one hit with a
hammer to knock off the old muffler. Which means it was not going to
stay on when the v6 starts up.

Also what was not in the photos is what was found when I tipped the old
muffler on its end!!!

A deceased rodent, which was in a state of decay!! The smell made both
myself and Cassey projectile vomit as it was that bad!

Just to show the comparison between the old and the new(er) mufflers.

I rested the 350z muffler on the trolley jack so I didn't wreck myself
when I was pulling and pushing it around under the back of the car.

The tow bar bracket had to come off as it was getting in the way!

Image

Image

Here is the upturned tow bar bracket, I think I will need a rethink on
the way the towbar bracket is structured, so it is straight forward and
easier to fit, and goes aounnd the muffler.

(I'll do that after the car is running but before the mot)

Image

The cars original exhaust hangers are too far in so the muffler is hitting
them so this is what they looked like before they were bent towards the
back of the car.

Image

Image

After a bit of bashing with a hammer and the hangers out of the way.
I took the grinder to the exhaust pipe, this is so I can get the muffler in
and try and plan the exhaust pipe and muffle position.

Image

Image

Image

I then totally removed the old exhaust hanger brackets. Please note the
bolt holes in the frame which are near to where the old exhaust hangers
used to be. These are a possible bolt holes for the new exhaust hangers.

Image

Image

The hangers on the muffler removed it looks like there is much more
space to work with.

Image

The question is do I take it a little further back so it doesn't rub or hit the
spare wheel well?

This would mean cutting into the rear bumper reinforcement.

Image

I will post some sketches later on tonight on how the muffler will hang from
the under side of the car.

This is roughly how I was thinking of hanging the muffler.

Image

Okay here is a thought, would there be any problems with the
muffler being flipped over, so that the inlet pipe is towards the
front and the outlet pipes are towards the back but higher up
than the inlet?

The reason why I am thinking of doing that is to make it easier
for the exhaust flow and the pipe construction.

As I possed the question about flipping the muffler over so the
intake pipe is at the back and easier to connect. And the outlet
pipes are currently pointing the wrong way.

Image

Image

As there needs to be a bracket to hang the muffler and the
hammock style which looks to be the better option for mounting
the muffler, the brackets/hangers will stick out further than the
pipes.

So having the outlet pipes higher up means when they have been
cut rotated welded and extended they won't interfere with the
hanging brackets or the plastic bumper and no cutting of the
bumper reinforcement

Yeas the muffler was dropped an inch.

The towbar bracket would definately need reworking on the left
hand side as the bend means it can't be fitted as is!

On the bench is a tin of silver high temp resistant paint I thought
it it only came in black!!

On either side is metal to be used in the towbar bracket and
exhaust hangers. Here is a question for you to think on, now chose
either the thin strips of metal and light angle iron(left). Or the heavy
6mm thick angle iron (right) including the tin of paint the bill came to
£30 at a hardware store and the other without the paint cost £3.00
from a fabrication shop.

I would have bought the lot in one place but I had forgotten when I
went into the first place and I was in a hurry after going food hoping
to get home with being ill.

(the answer will be posted tomorrow)

After being ill most of the day, 20 min with a bit of card and a craft
knife, I made the template and a cd marker pen marked up the heavy
gauge angle iron ready for cutting. Now you know I buy packs of cheap
cd marker pens for a pound as good markers would just be a waste of
money.

This is a fascinating read, I'm looking forward to hearing how it drives.

Neons seem to be gaining a following these days, I spotted this one outside the AsDa in Telford on Wednesday night, amazingly, the driver had managed to block three parking spots all at once. Another the same colour and age was sighted in the car park of a Buffs' club in Ludlow later that day:
Image

Note that the second had a very similar arrangement to the one you're after emulating with your rear silencer and its twin pipes.
And sorry, Aron, but it has to be said, the following picture shows a "muffler" around the neck of a mawe modew:
Image

So what's the connection between that most ancient form of neckwear and the exhaust component that every bugger else knows as a silencer? :?

From the Cambridge English dictionary:

muffler

noun ( CLOTHES ) /ˈmʌf.lər//-lɚ/ n [C] Definition
old-fashioned a thick scarf (= long piece of cloth worn around the neck)
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Whoops looks like the Americanisms have gotten the best of me

The replacement license plate bracket is here, and I started to do
some cutting of the heavy duty angle iron, and the heavens opened

Well after the license plate bracket arrived in the UK, the Royal Mail
sent it to the wrong depot and it just happened to be at the wrong
end of the country!

Image

Please note that it was Royal Mails screw up not the sender. It did
get here at lunch time. So here is the USA license plate bracket with
The 6" x 12" show plate.

Image

Image

And that will be as far as that plate goes as it is not UK road legal, even
if it does look nice, neat and tidy.

I did manage to do a little work outside, but as the heavens opened
without warning. I narrowly managed to avoid getting electrocuted off the
grinder!

Image

Within 1o seconds both myself and the dogs were soaked to the bone.
That grinder is now in a spot in the tool shed drying out, and it could be a
week before it's dried out properly.

Bloody British summer time, it's more like monsoon season!
