I've always used black shoe polish on rubber, works for me.
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Glycerine. It's used by restorers for all sorts, it's ideal for example where the only screen rubber available is NOS and a bit hardened by storage, it's also used on rollers, idler tyres and other rubbers in audio applications as it removes the oxidised surface and not only cleans the rubber but makes it softer, like new. 38ppl at your local pharmacy and that litre will last for decades.
If you're a regular, they'll often fill the bottle for free if you aks them nicely because it's a byproduct of so many other items, so take an empty in when you next go for your prescriptions.

i quite liked the back to black, it made shabby mgb bumpers presentable
Re: Best polish for rubber
It's not bad stuff at all, but is expensive. The only time in my life I was ever tasked with the cleaning of MG (Midget, but..) rubber bumpers, I was told to use peanut butter and that worked a treat. Slap it on, wait for dogs to come and spread it with their tongues, polish off with a soft clout, job done.rich. wrote:i quite liked the back to black, it made shabby mgb bumpers presentable![]()

the stuff i used the finish would last quite a while.. if i tried the dog trick it would have eaten the bumpers

Re: Best polish for rubber
back to black works well but does need constant re application for best results. It sometimes is a bit patchy on a 1st try but after 2 or 3 go`s the results are rather nice and even. Bit of a swine as if you get it on the bodywork it will leave a black smear.
Re: Best polish for rubber
Glycerine has none of these disadvantages and if you accidentally drink some during the job, it won't harm you and will in fact cause a very thorough, if somewhat rapid and unpredictable clearing out.
That's not why I'm advocating its use, it's genuinely the best solution as it preserves the surface and gets rid of any hardening or minor cracks.

You all seem to have an awful lot of experience with rubber!
I'm sorry. But i would have been expelled from equity if I didn't do that joke!
