Fuel filter before or after the pump?

#1 Post by TerryG »

I have had the tank out of my mog to clean and paint it (and the hole it is mounted) as some water had got in to the boot and puddled around it. While the fuel system is apart I am going to fit the filter I bought for it about 10 years ago. Question is does it go before or after the pump? It will mount neatly to the bulkhead either way and the hoses are the same size so it makes no real difference from a physical point of view.

In both my Midget and my Minor I've mounted the filter in the engine bay, in the fuel line to the carb where I can easily see if there's any muck in it and easily get to it to change it when needed.

Works for me.

my herald had one between the tank and the pump and the pump and the carb. If you have a mechanical pump then I`d say between the tank and the mech pump to stop crap damaging the pump

Cheers luxo, between the pump and carb it is.

I have the standard SU pump but upgraded to get rid of the points (only because it needed points and ESM were out of stock but had the conversion kit on the shelf).

Likewise, on both cars. That and halogen headlights are the ONLY non-standard things on the Minor, and I like it that way.

@megadeath - yeah, I think if you know you've got a risk of carp in the tank and possible lumpy bits coming out then both positions make sense, but if you've got a normally clean tank and clean supply, putting a single filter where you can see it is the winning decision for me.

if you can keep Carp in your tank then its not so much water in the fuel but the other way round... And if you car still runs then I `m amazed.

The tank in the Herald has a bit of grot inside but is ok. Cant think why the previous owner put two on the car but anyway. The first sits inside the boot and so is easily spotted between the tank and the metal line and the second is in the usual spot just before the Carb.

Maybe the previous owner had a fuel pump diaphragm splt and attributed it to grot from the tank?

Ive gone just before the carb as its the easiest location to access a bit of flexible pipe. I was worried at first that it would get too hot but that hasnt occurred in practice and is easily checked. Bought the pipe, filter and correct pipe fittings from Demon Tweeks (after buying some fuel pipe from a different source that promptly disintegrated after about a month of use)
