Garage Find & Documentation Issues

#1 Post by BlueNoseIan »

Hi out there. I'm looking at buying a project car this weekend & am thinking about lots of difficulties that may not be there!

The car I'm looking at is a garage find & the registration is not visible. If the person selling doesn't have the logbook, how difficult is it to get the documentation sorted & how much will it cost?

Look forward to hearing from you. I;m sure many have had similar experiences!

Hi Ian, welcome to the forum.
If you can find the registration then getting a V5c issued is pretty easy. You just need the VIN number and reg number then you can fill in a V62 and send it to the DVLA with a cheque for £25.
If the plates are missing look for an old tax disc or MOT.

Without a registration number things are more difficult. It depends how long the car has been off the road but the best place to look is on the DVLA's website here:
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/old-vehicles
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

Hi Ian, just been through this very procedure, (this is something I put on the Wolseley Forum recently);

Have you ever had one of those long drawn out issues with the DVLA that drives you crazy?

I rescued a nice little mk3 1500 from the scrapman, after the owner decided to get rid, as they only wanted the reg number off the car. The car sat in a garage for 12 years prior to this decision to get rid.

So I buy this car, which needs a bit of work but not too much, so I apply to DVLA on a V62 to obtain a new log book, problem is no tax discs, mots or anything to show its id except for the original number plates which were sat on the rear seat.

Sent off supporting pictures of vehicle, plates and chasis number and today (6 weeks later) have now received another form V58-1 asking the exact same questions as the V62.

So rang them up and spoke to s chap there who said they cannot progress enquiry until the form is returned despite admitting that it is duplication for the sake of it??????????

He did however say that vehicle is not shown as scrapped but that they need to search further to find it on the system with the chassis number shown on the car???????

Is it just me or has the world gone mad!!!!!!!
I am pleased to say I have just received the logbook after they went to the bowels of the DVLA to find my vehicle on their ancient micro fiche records...... Good luck hope it goes smoothly
Best wishes, Paul

Thanks for the responses, folks. I had already scanned the DVLA website, so you have confirmed what I thought I understood(!)

My concern stems from the fact that the car was originally descibed as a 1966 car. I was told that it had a 1960 boot which caused the original confusion, but was then told it was a 72 but has been re-advertised on a website as 73! The age would be apparent from the registration, tax disc or MOT.

Hopefully everything works out . . .

Ian
