Insurance for 2 cars

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Insurance for 2 cars

#1 Post by 3xpendable »

I know it's an ege old hat on here, but now I have a 2nd car I'm wanting some advice on insurance. My 2 cars are currently on my fathers garage policy (i'm a named driver) but ideal when it comes up for renewal next March I want to be independent.

I looked at Aviva Multicar as it was the first one that came to my head but for a 2001 Mondeo worth maybe a grand tops and a 1999 Puma for a 32yo married guy they wanted £975 a pair, whereas my current deal is about £500 a year.

I looked on Footman James but the puma is too new. Does anyone have some experience and wisdom for insuring 2 cars? I'm happy to pay around £600 tops but anything more than that isn't worth it for me so one would have to go

Good day

For what it's worth our two dailies are insured with Tesco ( we also get the club card points as well) ditto with the house insurance. Currently, for us, they are the cheapest around at the moment, we were insured with Churchill for years and then last year the premium for our Honda CR V went up massively with no explanation so we shopped around and came up with Tesco. I'm fully aware that personal disposition and other various factors come into play with insurance bt it was Tesco for us.

I haven't found multi-car policies to save a penny In the case of Admiral, it worked out more expensive than insuring 3 cars separately!
My mog is with Lancaster, Range is with Swinton, one focus with Elephant and the other with the NFU (although one will be moving to Kwikfit this month as they are £100 cheaper!)
Use a meerkat related website, see who is cheapest then call them for a proper quote. I got the price down another £30 by doing that.
No "free" toy but I would rather have a few extra £ off than more clutter.
(Someone's marketing department has got to IE, it keeps autocorrecting meerkat to market!)

If you want classic policies (which will entail limited mileage of 5,000 or so) then try Peter Best or RH insurance specialists - I've had good service and good prices from both.

Thanks all, Its not for another 7 months or so yet so I have time. Is that reasonable to expect 2 cars insured for under £600? I'm not sure whether to insure the Mondeo fully comp as it isn't really worth more than £1000 probably!

That depends how old you are.
Mog £75pa (I think)
2005 focus diesel £308 (renewed it today)
2000 focus 2.0 ghia £175 (also renewed today)
Can't remember the rr off the top of my head.
I am 32, 11 years NCB, no incidents in the last 3 years, live in a nice area, cars kept on drive, etc.

Thanks Terry,

Yeah I'm in Cardiff but a nice area of Cardiff. I'm also not sure how the NCB works now, as I'm a named driver on a policy thats (touchwood) never been claimed on. I know some companies accept that as valid NCB but others don't. Like I say its a job to do at the start of next year so I have some time :)

Get a quote for both, don't automatically assume that 3rd party would be cheaper, oddly I've seen a number of instances where fully comp was cheaper - it's an odd, odd world, insurance !

That's why I got all three kids to have policies in their own name right from the start - cost more to start with but very quickly came down with No Claims Discount as it was always on policies that had been in their own name. You also mention they are currently on your fathers garage policy and so if this is a business policy I would guess that the NCD rules are different ?

Also agree with Luxo - Comprehensive often about the same as Third Party.

Never really thought about a multicar policy but with three moderns and two old wrecks, then it might be more advantageous - be interested to hear the results of your enquiries.

You need more than two cars to get a block policy (Not sure how many; I think it is about 5 or 6). I've been with PBIS for years (I am one of their "Oldest" accounts) and have no gripes. My V8, which you've seen, costs (I think) about £150 a year based on 1500 miles. PBIS do MG Car Club schemes.
