ok, I know its a topic that has been covered before but didn't find it in search.
I've just topped off the expansion tank of an eighties Honda scooter with traditional blue antifreeze (its the only one type they stock locally), and then noticed the coolant in the rad is actually the fluorescenty green stuff. (yes I should have checked first)
Do the two mix or do I need to get draining the expansion tank?
Both blue and fluorescent green could be either MEG or OAT, the colour is - unfortunately - not enough in itself to tell you what type you have there. I have some fluorescent greenish/bluish stuff that is most certainly MPG-based as that's what VW are currently specifying to prevent random pet deaths and it makes sense to use it in the old motors too since they're actually likely to leak or otherwise put it on the floor. However, I also have some blue coolant concentrate that is most definitely OAT in origin that was given to me by Mercedes Coldstream after the Smart had been in for one of its services.
So the only way you can be sure is to keep an eye on the cooling system and if the liquid turns to gel (the two types; glycol and OAT based turn to a thick goo-fadge when they mix and you generally find this within a few minutes of starting the engine) then drain, flush with clean water under pressure, refill with glycol based stuff (MPG if you can get hold of it locally) and fingers crossed it'll be grand. (MEG is still available, but please keep pets away from sources of it. It is fatal to cats and rodents among other beasts that can't take it).
J "Home is where you park it", so the saying goes. That may yet come true..
