Datsun is returning!

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Datsun is returning!

#1 Post by tractorman »

I noticed that Nissan are going to revive the Datsun name!

OK, it's for a cheap car in India, but perhaps that idea will catch on and we will be able to buy new Morris cars again soon!

Up until 1971 or so, my grandfather had only ever owned British cars (From Austin 7s to a Jaguar XK140, which is still about) but in 1971, he bought a VW K70 and that was followed by a Datsun 200L and then a 120A (I think the K70 was a nicer car than either but the 200L had a nice smooth six). You never saw many of the 120A, like the one he had but I saw one like it, at an event in 2010. I can remember the reg no (SNY 41S) and find that it hasn't been on the road since March 1992 (Nearly eleven years after my grandfather died and three months before my grandmother died). Oddly enough, his last car, a Renault 14 GTL, lasted a little over ten years (Novermber 1989) and of the two, I felt the Renault was the nicer car (Orcourse a lot depends on how they are looked after and whether they get shunted).

I'm not sure whether I first encountered the name Nissan; on both or just the later Datsun. Both cars were badged as Datsuns but Nissan (Or was it "OK Nissan"; what is OK in Japanese?) cropped up on stickers or in the handbook (After 35 years, I can't remember exactly).

The 200L is somewhere near on colour; it could have been that colour! The K70 and the 120A were both a kind of metalic gold and the 14 was light green (Earlier model, with slightly different front lights). He very much liked the Renault 14 and when I last saw him, he was driving it from my parents' house. Less than two days later, he died rather suddenly and unexpectedly  .

My mate had a 120Y. One day the gearbox 'grenaded' and it rained Datsun cogs! ;)

An opportunity to revive an old joke that couldn't be missed. Almost as bad as a former President of South Africa being
Nissan main dealer...........and there's more!
