Ay up!
OK, an LDV van is hardly a classic but it is old.
These use a 13mm bolt for the sump plug but it was overtightened to b#####y by a previous bodger (possibly the one who forgot to tension the timing belt?) and chewed the nut up. It has since seized in posish - a new one on me. How can it seize with a gallon plus of oil behind it?
Anyway, the head is well and truly knackered and, despite trying a single hex socket, remains in place. Spanners are no use because the simply slip off. Any ideas?

Yes, you need a set of Irwin nut removers, like these:

They work really well - if they don't shift it, you're in to welding a larger nut to it and using that.

Had a similar problem with my new focus and had to resort to having a nut welded to it. Some people don't know their own strength!
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

migging a nut over the top of the old one did the business with my PT Cruiser, don't know wether it was the new nut or the heat to attach it, but keeping it in place while welding it was definite fun.

SAAB 9k - tightened solid - chewed....... Drove to local tyre place (had full lift) he hammerrreddddd a socket on [Agg! Mind me Ally Sump!!!] Got it loose - drove home, dropped oil/filter, filed 2 flatts to suit smaller O/E spanner - new washer.

SAAB 9k - tightened solid - chewed....... Drove to local tyre place (had full lift) he hammerrreddddd a socket on [Agg! Mind me Ally Sump!!!] Got it loose - drove home, dropped oil/filter, filed 2 flatts to suit smaller O/E spanner - new washer.

Yeah, thing is, it's not about being a wimp, it's just that the "hammer a socket on" method can easily wreck the sump and sometimes the socket too, so actually potentially quite an expensive solution. I would have gone down the weld on a bigger nut route, using plenty of amps to get penetration and then walking away to let the plug cool right down . If you try straight away you will probably snap the newly welded nut off . The effect of welding on the nut and allowing it to cool will probably mean that it will turn out quite easily.
