If only more people did stuff just because they can, rather than worrying about such things as why and how, then the world would be full of old Austins with Kubota Diesel engines and we'd all own the oil we find when digging under our back lawns instead of having to inform the ministry of malicious interference, or whoever they are these days.

I really think you ought to be trying harder. The 'Withnail and I' thing was a waste of space - many people think the film was rubbish, you may be surprised to know. And two whole pages to plug a caravan book? Really.

There is one part of the world where there are front engined rear drive cars made in "meaningful" quantities - Australia.
The local Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore models are always in the top three sellers here. The Aussie tradional RWD with a big six or a V8.
Most of the Taxis are Falcons here.
In the UK you can buy the Commodore as the Vauxhall VXR8 and it was the Pontiac G8 in the US until Pontiac died. The current Camaro is also built on the Commodore platform and the US Chervolet Caprice Police car is actually a Holden Statesman (long wheel base Commodore) made in Aus.
I agree with you on the Toyota MR2. A highly underrated classic car. My faded and slightly battered ex-USA 85 model has 179,000 miles on it. But it still goes well, has no rust and everything electrical still works perfectly.
