Austin Morris J4 engine/gearbox upgrades

#1 Post by OneCarefulOwner »

I'm toying with the idea of a J4... Well, I love the idea of a J4, but I'm toying with options to make it more practical as not just a load-lugger but possibly even a tower.

Would an MGB 1.8TC lump be a straight swap, and would I also be able to retain/obtain an overdrive-capable gearbox? With the shifter linkage in the J4, I'm not sure if it's worth looking at possible 5-speed upgrades rather than an overdrive, but I'm guessing there's adaptors available for Ford Type 9s to attach to B-series lumps if the linkage could be made to work?

What other blocks might be suitable for drop-in upgrades? As I'm a Londoner, I'm looking at purely petrol-powered options so as to avoid any possibility of conflict with the LEZ regs.

Also, where might I source suitable brake upgrades?
…that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today.
If I was allowed a sigpic, this would be it
