3rd party oil filters?

I know we have covered something similar before (possibly on the old forum)
I changed my oil and filter about a month ago and i am positive it is taking longer to build oil pressure (it seems to take forever but is probably 5 seconds) I have used the same oil as came out (Castrol 10w40) but my local motor factors has stopped stocking wix filters and has fujitoyo ones instead. I have never heard of them and a google search finds them as cheapos on ebay.
Has anybody else had one of this brand or other "cheap" filters allowing oil to flow back or am I being paranoid and Rover v8s do take 5 seconds to build pressure in the cold?

If the filter sits horizontally or upside down on the adaptor, then yes, you need one with an anti-draindown valve fitted but if it hangs vertically from the adaptor, it can't drain down and the valve isn't needed. Did you notice the delay with the Wix filter - assuming that it isn't vertically mounted? If not, then there's your answer.
Fram, Coopers and Mann all make alternatives that do include the valve or you could spend a little more and buy a Unipart or K&N one of the specified type.
ISTR that the RV8 engine has a 3/4 UNF filter adaptor fitting, in that case, buy one from a Volvo dealer as listed for pre-1985ish Volvos. Volvo filters aren't made by any of the aftermarket suppliers and have a far better medium than that found in even the best of the rest, well worth the £6 or so that they cost per unit if bought singly.

I'm sure i didn't have to wait this long with the wix filter but i'm not driving the range as much at the moment and it is damn cold.
I have ordered a couple of origional filters from the local stealer (£6.50 each which is only 50p more than the one from my local parts place!) I can handle a wasted filter rather than another engine rebuild!

This appears to be a common problem on Triumph 6's that have had a spin on filter fitted, if the filter doesn't have an anti drain valve fitted, it then has to fill filter back up before pressure builds up enough to stop the knock. Mine can take a while to get pressure up after its been sat for any length of time

Quite possibly, but Mann and Wix both have O/E-specific media. My point was that they're not available from likes of Fram and nor are they sold with the same medium to any other suppliers. Their medium is unique to Volvo which is what make them special, and the filter of choice among the tweaked Imp and F750 fraternities among others in the know . I used them in the adaptor on the Dolomite too, best filters out! Also very popular among those who use the Rover V8 in off road racing where the dust and filth that can find its way into their oil via atmospheric crankcase filters could wreck any lesser medium in a single event.
So if you have one with the Metric adaptor, it's worth picking up a 3/4" one from a pre-'8? engine.

I've taken to disconnecting the coil and spinning the engine for a few seonds on the starter if I've left the Midget (Triumph 1500) for more than a day or so, I'm using MG Rover filters but there's quite a few seconds until the pressure builds.

Are manufacturers going off spin on filters? My Kia Rio deisel and my friends Land Rover Defender have a plastic cap which is un screwed to reveal a paper filter. John bought a filter from a local factor to change the oil and after fitting it checked for oil leaks. Five miles down the road the engine started to run rough , he pulled in and found that the filter seal had pushed out and pumped all the oil out. The engine was a mess. After he had replaced the engine he took the filter off the damaged engine and found that the seal that came with the factors filter was approx 3/16" dia and the old seal was approx 1/4". Sufficient to make a seal on startup but when the engine had heated up could not take the pressure. If any of you have a similar filter on your modern cars compare the old and new seals before fitting as the filter manufacturers deny that their filter was at fault.

Yes, very much so. All in the name of being "green" and reducing wastage of metal. But your point about practicality and leakage is very valid!
