SIP Airmate 25ltr Compressor and a respray

#1 Post by ajmin »

I am going to respray my car panel by panel because most of them are off the car or at least the ones i intend to use to put back on and I have a Sip Airmate compressor 25ltr variety which I intended using. I have found a supplier who will mix my paint (cellulose) in the correct period colour along with etch primer, primer and thinners etc

I didn't ask this question of the supplier and probably should, but..

Firstly is it man enough for the job or will it not supply the required cfm, I think its about 5cfm max. I was intending or been advised that a gun pressure of about 60psi is around the mark.

If the answer is no.. is it feasable to link 2 25ltr compressors together ie a y lead on the outputs to feed the gun or should I go for a bigger 50ltr compressor.

Any thoughts or comments welcome

A lot depends on the spraygun: some use a lot of air, but others will happily run at 5CFM - however, is your 5CFM FAD (Free air delivery) as that is how guns are rated - not displacement, which is how compressors seem to be sold!

I sprayed two of my tractors with a 7.5CFM FAD SIP compressor with a 25l tank and, although it did a reasonably good job, the compressor was running for most of the time. It will be interesting to see how my new one (11CFM FAD with 150l tank) copes when I spray a safety frame later in the month (weather permitting)!

Teh gun I use normally is a cheap Screwfix gravity fed one and it is probably as good as I will ever need: the quality of the spraying is limited by my ability and not the gun's!
