It could be worse, I only remembered it was my birthday when the cashpoint beeped at me and said "happy birthday" so it looks like the only person (including me) that remembered mine was my bank manager!

Today Dad put the the Discovery back together welding on it completed.
He then put diesel in the tank and tried to drive it off the drive.
Only one problem he may have put contaminated diesel in the tank.
Oh well! he will have fun tomorrow.

He did some more welding for me.
The rear engine mount brackets, the engine/transmission part is now
complete but just needs painting.







Now the subframe part.









I then tried this part on the subframe over the steering rack.





And now the other way









The front engine mount, it's not going to win a beauty contest.
I will fill the holes before painting, but I tidied it up with
the grinder.

Might have the engine and transmission in again for a fitting
at the weekend, weather permitting.

Yeah that happens with discoveries. Let me guess, having to drop out the tank = Boot floor / or rear chassis / or rear sills or all 3

I suspect after that, welding together some clean solid metal for the engine mounts was a relief.

So when we gonna see this bad boy on the road then?

Reminds me of the guy in Chicago several years ago who was found dead in an apartment after two years. No one noticed because his bank continued to automatically pay the bills as they came due until his account ran dry. Finally it was the electricity company that turned up to cut the power off.

After a few days of messing around, Dad hasn't got his land rover discovery
working properly. And I'm not touching it as it's not mine, and if anything
goes wrong I get the blame wither I did it or not!
So Dad has called in a mechanic friend to take a look, I will be glad when it's
fixed as mother can use that and I can borrow her car for running errands.

I have a picture of one of the speedometers out of the tool shed.



I've been picking Jimbo's brains.
I posed the question what used the same gearbox but with a speedo cable,
rather than an electronic speed sensor.

One of the options that was suggested was the Dodge Omni, which I then
remembered it's called the Talbot Horizon over here in the UK.
It was a mater of a few emals and calls for prices.
The dealer wanted £100 plus tax (20%) and couldn't tell me if full unit, or just
one part!

Eventually, I came across a Talbot owners club forum with details of a parts
supplier. His name is Colin Hill I sent mail containing the above pictures.
He said he would look and email me back. He did with the pictures below his words.

I do indeed have the part from a Horizon Automatic and attach 2 pictures.
Size of aperture for the fitting is 32mm.
If interested £20 including postage.
Can accept Paypal if you have it,or cheque or cash.

So that has been paid and will arrive next week sometime.

Then I came across a nice multi gauge unit off a Wolseley





A rare gauge indeed, if I don't use it in the neon it's one to be saved.
Fuel level, Water temp, Amps, and an Oil pressure Gauge in one unit.

Well dad goes back to work on monday, so I can get to work again.
As he has been using my engine crane to lift his boat engine.

That multi gauge is no use for a car with an alternator, but as you say; well worth saving.
Also, consider that the Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon (US) and the Chrysler Horizon (UK) aren't the same car under the skin. They look similar but don't share any panels, trim, torsion bar suspension (Omni has struts and coils both ends), VW Golf engines/gearboxes (same Golf gearbox in the Omni as found in the Maestro & Montego), looms, glass - apart from the o/s/r drop pane, etc. Maxi arrangement is as has been said earlier, but the Golf gearbox has its speedo takeoff from the n/s driveshaft position on the Golf of the era (basing this on my P plate CL Variant with ADZ engine and 5 speed manual), so it's a reasonable assumption that the Maestegos, with the same gearbox, also use that arrangement.

I get that it's pricey, but electronic speed & distance recording may be the best way to go in the end.

Just got my friendly mechanic back and he is doing house calls privately.
My build will be stepping up a gear or two.

I'm going to get him to do the brake pipe connections etc,as I have no
experience with doing the pipes, so I will run the pipes and let him do the
rest on the braking system.

I pick the brake pipe and parts up Monday.

Best to get it done properly, engine blowing or going wrong is nothing,
if the old girl won't stop right!!!!

Well dad's Landrover Discovery is almost ready for re-MOTing.
As the mechanic didn't call to fix it today he his coming tomorrow.
Because he never came today I got the tools out and put the pulleys on.



Now looking at previous pictures.







I know I will need another roller pulley between the Alternator and chrank shaft
pulley. BUT! the placement of the spring loaded pensioner needs moving as the
brake master cylinder is there.
