) cut ,at MuffatS Gears , I was informed ... " No .." COGS" are made from wood "...

Technically true, but try telling that to Volvo, Ford or anyone else whose engines have ever used Lignum Vitae timing gears for refinement's sake.
Of course, when they shear, you invariably wish that they were made of some kind of metallic compound:

I have an old Mamod Traction engine and I bought my dad a new Mamod showmans engine for his last birthday.
They are great toys! The box shows a 8 year old playing with it, i certainly wouldn't let my 7 year old nephew play with it alone!

I have a Mamod Traction Engine meself. Must get a new cylinder and piston for it, then I can steam it again!
You'd need dynamite to get it off me....

Pedantic buggers
I always understood a cog be the toothed part of a wheel or gear that meshes with another wheel or gear to transfer force from one to t'other. Hence "Cog wheels"
I don't think I ever had a mamod, but as a kid I did have a couple of quite dodgy steam stationary engines, generally complete with the pin holes in the boilers plugged with solder. The smell of Meths on those long summer holidays will always remain with me. I made one with the son a few years back from a "kit" where you get the basic blocks, rods, sheets which was quite fun but (me being a little rough) didn't work too well but did go with a good head of steam.
