I had to figure the 'yes', 'no', & 'and' gates and how to get from inputs to a single output.
I have sent a picture of it to someone who nows the components to suggest the right ones.

Okay here is what I'm planning(if I can get it right)
This little project will be in 3 parts:

1st part will be specifically for the 41te Chrysler/Dodge Transmission.

2nd part will be the board which will be universal to be used on any
vehicle so this will be separate from the 41te part for this reason.
The board will have to have a connector block down one side for the
inputs from either a board or from switches on the gear lever.

Inputs and what will hopefully be displayed on led segment
Park = P
Reverse = R
Neutral = N
Drive = D
1st = 1
2nd = 2
3rd = 3
4th = 4
5th = 5
6th = 6
No gear selected, or error, or in between gear changes will have a a rotating
bar to show it's thinking(I hope)

I have put a 6th gear option on incase someone wants to put it on a newer
vehicle, as there are some hydraulic auto's out there if using it on the gear
lever they will need the D. So I'm trying to cover all bases with this part.

There will be a long plug for the cable to the led digital to plug into in the
right of this board.

3rd the Led Digital Display, this is going to be on a long cable so it can be
inserted into an existing display or else where, where there is no space for the
circuit board. Also by having the plug means you only need to unplug the cable
rather than remove the full wiring if you need to remove the instrument cluster
for any reason.

Also by making the led display separate from the board, if you don't like the
colour of the display you don't need to touch the board to change it!
