digital gear selector indicator

#1 Post by Mitsuru »

Here is a D.I.Y. mod if you want it.

I was looking at how to display what gear the automatic transmission
was in, but realised that as the system would need to read the bus
system that most cars have I could just show what option the gear
selector was in!

Which means that this info could be used for manual or automatics
gear indicator.

Here is a list of parts you will need.

-6(maybe more depending on where you decide to mount them) Off in resting position magnetic switches.
-A butt load of wire
-27 diodes
-7 5200ohm resistors
-PC board
-Enclosure box
-2 female 9 pin connectors
-2 male 9 pin connectors
-solder
-15watt iron w/ very small tip
-very good soldering skills
-several burns and curse words

this circuit needs to be made VERY small so you can hide it in enclosure and hide it under the cup holder/shifter area.

please note I nicked the above from the Honda civic forum
http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/do-yours ... cator.html

But if I use one of these I would get a good set of capital letters.
P, R and N

Normal people don't like being ripped off!
Did you notice that site didn't display prices straight off!

And each car is different.

Just as a matter of interest.
How many people would want one of these on their car?

I found a company that manufactures the alpha numeric
led digital display in blue but only sells them in batches
with a minimum of 8 per order.
LED display size 0.5'' (12.7mm)

Just incase the company I emailed doesn't do anything,
I was debating on making a couple when the weather is
too bad to do anything out side.

The below is the reply I have just received about that
email I sent to the ebay company.

Dear ****,

Thanks for your email.

I am sorry to let you know that we don't have the gear
indicator as your description.

Best regards,
funky-ghs

So it is going to be a totally home made kit/project!

Been a while since I did circuit diagrams for electronics.
And this is a first attempt with 'and' gates with 'inverters'

Yes I know it's a fail as if no power to the solenoids , means
no power to the led/bulb/digital display!

And I'm using a demo program for this which won't let me
run it only plan it so no fault finding!

While I was looking at alpha numeric displays and circuits
wiring, I came across this home made instrument cluster.

Just thought I'd share it, as it has wiring and circuit diagrams.

After getting a copy of software that can test a circuit I came up with this.

A circuit diagram that actually shows the components within those IC would be handy for those of us who may want to build a discrete version for a different but related purpose please.....
