MERCEDES 230CLK

Hi,I have a problem with the reverse lights not working on a 1999 CLK 230.I have been told that this is the gear selector assy and not just a simple relay or fuse.Has anybody any idea if this is a fixable thing as the cost quoted was around the £400 mark?Will a car pass an MOT with no reverse lights?

Yes.
Currently over 35 years worth of fixing 35 boxes.
Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.
