I've heard of the Noakes fellow, but the other one is a complete mystery to me too, but then again I had to have Taylor Swift explained to me.
You might like this tale John. Back in the late 80's, early 90's, just before the rise of cheap mobiles, I was a general manager of Argos, that's the distribution warehouse not an Argos store. Actually I worked for Hays, but that could both distract and complicate the story.
All that morning I had been trying to get hold of our salesman, back then we would page whoever we were trying to contact and they would phone in, via the landline, on a reverse charge call.
The phones had been going mad that morning, everyone had a phone stuck to their ear, so just to shut it up, I answered the phone.
Operator: "Mr Gary Barlow is calling you from Northampton, will you take the charge."
Me: Holding hand over mouthpiece and speaking to everyone in general: "Have we got an agency driver out in Northampton today, name of Gary Barlow?"
Office staff: Silly grins all round.
Me: "What have I said that's so funny?"
Office staff: Yet more silly grins.
Me: "Hello, operator," I'm just about to tell her when.........
Salesman: "Robert, Robert, it's me Simon."
Me: "Simon? Yes, yes operator we'll accept the charge." "Simon, who the **** is Gary Barlow?"
Salesman: "You really don't know, do you?"
Me: "We'll talk about this back at the office, I'll see you later."
Me: To everyone in the office. "Someone mind telling me who the **** is Gary Barlow."
Nobody did, but my missus explained when I told her the tale. Mind you, I was non the wiser.
