I added classic because if I include new cars then I guess its a BMW RR Phantom.
This posting is for fun and highly subjective.
I put forward the Jaguar XJ12 esp the Diamler Double Six. Follwed closely by the XJ6.
But that's ignoring a S class Mercedes Benz. And of course Bentley and the old Rolls Royce from Crewe. And what about something like a V12 Lagonda. The 1930s produced some very well appointed cars.
I have driven a few XJ Saloons and they are very good when in good condition. And an animal if neglected. Buts thats true of most cars.
A bit of Rolls Royce and Jaguar history.
The Shadow was introduced in 1965 but due to production problems it took a while to get them made. The XJ turned up in 1969. Jaguar gave Rolls Royce an XJ6 to play with. The XJ6 seriously worried RR. And when the Double Six turned up even more impressed. RR saving grace was that the Jag was seen as a cads car bit like Arthur Daily. Jag and RR have always politely been watching each other. The Bentley Mk6s competitor was the Jaguar Mk 7. Why buy a 6 when one could buy a 7 for a 3rd of the price. There was no Jag Mk 6.
Car makers often exchange cars and strip them down to see what makes them tick. I visited land Rover in 1998 and they had a workshop with about 10 cars of various makes in bits.

Re: Best classic luxury car in the world.
There was a time, a few years before WW2, when MG had aspirations of matching, or even bettering, The Jaguar car company, or as was then called: SS Jaguar. MG were fast growing a reputation for making desirable sports cars. But Cecil Kimber, MG's head honcho, was determined to give William Lyons a run for his money. To that end, MG produced the SA, WA & VA. The WA being the biggest, most costly to produce, yet oh so desirable. Only a handful were ever built, today a rusting wreck would set you back a decent lottery win. It's by no means many people's choice, but I am forever scouring obscure websites to find one. One day maybe:
The MG WA.
The MG WA.
Re: Best classic luxury car in the world.
I nominate the Range Rover (I may be biased) super comfortable to drive, V8 soundtrack and big comfy leather arm chairs to sit in.
You can get one with an MOT for less than a grand (I wouldn't suggest it unless you like welding) and every mechanical part is available off the shelf at a thoroughly reasonable price.
How about a MK1 Jag XJ. I have only sat in them at shows but they are pretty comfy and look wonderful.

Re: Best classic luxury car in the world.
The MG WA looks nice.
At Gaydon is a 6 cylinder MG sports tourer from the 30s. That is also a lovely car.
The XJ series 1 had the best looking dash board but had a lower front bumper than the series 2. So I would like a series 1.5. fitted with VP trim and a 6 litre Lister V12.
The Range Rover was displayed in the Paris Museum. The only car ever. I had a 1977 Range Rover. The trim wasn't exactly luxury because it was still at the hoze it out idea. However the later models like the vogue are more luxurious. I say a Vogue could be the best classic luxury car. The pope had one the Queen has one.
If its raining and your on foot and a mate stops in a rat of an old van then the van is luxury compared to walking in the rain.
I have over the years driven a lot of new cars and as the years went past the cars better and better. I know of a few cars that are almost as good as a Roller at a fraction of the price. I then think is a Roller worth the extra money and I think no.
Howabout a Rover P5. These are good, the six cylinder version has a very high quality engine. And its not as slow as some think.
Lincoln Continental. Packard have made some lovely cars.
Prince Henry Vauxhall. This was another Rolls-Royce competitor.

Re: Best classic luxury car in the world.
Have a look and see if you can find an "in vogue" The first factory Range Rover Limousine or an LSE, the last of them.
Do you count a luxury car as one you drive or one you are driven in? The P5b is a good looking car but I like the proportions of the coupe best and that is more for driving.
I have only ever been driven in a Shadow and it was certainly a comfortable place to be. a leather living room suite and lambs wool mats certainly look as expensive as they are. I'm just not sure I would have the Roller over the Bentley (assuming I had money to burn). Very similar looks and ride but a big turbo.

Datsun 280C with all of the trimmings, that's the one to beat.

Re: Best classic luxury car in the world.
I think in luxury cars the passengers view must count.
The Turbo R is a very quick luxury car. They are so easy to drive fast and get nicked by the fuzz.
Stick the auto box in 2nd and floor it.
I like the Rover P5 and P5B coupes 4 door as well.
It is surprising how many makers of normal cars have dabbled in luxury cars. Austin made luxury cars before WW1. Austin wasn't a successful maker until the seven. Then Austin realised that luxury cars don't sell that well.
The Westminster could be a contender.
So many things to consider.
The cost is irrelevant.

Re: Best classic luxury car in the world.
I forgot to say.
The Bentley versions of Rolls Royces apart from the turbo are the same car. Often the engine has Rolls Royce on it. It depends whether they had any Bentley rocker covers in stock.
Bentley is cheaper new because the rad shell is a pressing, and much easier to make. Used Bentleys are about 10% more.
I have never believed that because something is hand made and therefore worth more and better.
The Bentley rad shell is a pressing. The press drops and bosch one Bentley rad shell. The shell looks better than the hand made greek temple design.
