I have IMO two suggestions.
MX 5 for the budget conscious.
Ferrari 308 for the more affluent.

Honda Prelude is a good choice. Bullet proof.
In general Honda may be the best car. I never quite understood why they are considered as an old people's car.

The Prelude is a great wee coupé for sure, but is it your actual sports car? I think it might not be that.
Greatest sports car in my view is anything raw, basic and without gadgets that get in the way, so MX5 counts but so does the good old Spridget, the Lotus Elans, any one of the Caterham, Westfield, Robin Hood and similar four wheeled superbikes. Anything bigger or more luxurious is just not a sports car. Even if it has a poncing donkey on its badge.

The Ariel Atom should be added to that list.

Absolutely! Cars don't come much more raw than the Atom.

The Ferrari 308 weighs 1000kg 240 bhp and is not a luxury car its a proper sports car.
I have driven and worked on 308/328 GTS/GTB. They are very good.
E type Jag.
MG TD.
TR 6. 5. 4.
Aston Martin.

Astons were always sold as "Grand Tourers" until relatively recently; I don't know what forms the current range, but there are some quite small ones. I'd say they were luxury cars though and no aspirations to sportiness!
I always liked the TR2 and TR6 and would rate either as a decent sports car. I suspect there are others that know better!

Re: Best sports car in world
TR2 & TR3 are lovely things to drive and like most low slung cars, they feel much faster than they are. I've been fortunate enough to have a hurl in a good example of each and they're everything a sports car should be, IMHO. Not fast things, but low, noisy (in a good way), crude (again in a good way because crude = uncomplicated here) and very easy on the eye.
Maybe there have to be different categories for cheap, basic sports cars in the Spridget, TR2, MX5 vein, average (in price terms) ones such as the Lotus Elan, Elite and Elise and dearer ones like the TVRs, the Reliant Sabre, SST, etc. and overpriced, exotic ones that are great for looking at and driving if they belong to someone else, but will cost more to service than the cost of a serviceable new car such as the Dacia Logan.
Then there's the DeLorean. It should be as good as an Alpine since it shares the French car's V6 Volvo estate engine, it should be as good as a Lotus Esprit because Lotus did the chassis work before the mid engined idea was shelved in the interests of carrying the manufacturer's golf clubs but in reality, it's better than these combined! I'll explain the logic now, rather than be brought to task over it later: DeLoreans are comfortable and bouncy. We have a maximum speed limit across the UK, we don't all want to buy track days in order to use our cars (having a track day bought for us is fine, don't let me stop you if..
) and our roads are so badly surfaced that the suspension on a modern hatchback needs substantial work after only two years/58,976 miles
, so soft springs and gentle damping is good. DeLorean for the win!
