Take for instance the trim. The trim apart from seats is either flat ply covered in dead cow. Or wood with veneer. Apart from seats easy to sort out. Headlining is differcult
Every part is available.
Every bit is screwed together with normal nuts and bolts.
Even electrical switches come apart for repair.
Window lift motors have brushes that can be replaced. The window lift gearbox comes apart easy. And so on.
My stop lamp switch went wrong. I took the screws out and cleaned the contacts job done.
However there is a lot of bits. And its time consumming.
Only two things that defeat the diyer. Rear wheel brgs and accumulators. Rear hubs are available exchange and so are accumulators.
All the special tools are easy to make even the ones for the rear hub and accumulators. The problem with the brgs and spheres is the amount of torque to undo them and the hub needs 60 ton press to remove the drive shaft yoke.

Bob

Keep going bob, I'm starting to convince my missus that it would be a good idea to have one as a classic!History wrote:Take for instance the trim. The trim apart from seats is either flat ply covered in dead cow. Or wood with veneer. Apart from seats easy to sort out. Headlining is differcult

Re: Why Shadows are a diyers delight.
Window motors are still the same today....I pulled the one on th wife's car apart last week as it'd started sticking. A decade of everyday use had left it full of carbon off the brushes. A clean out with switch cleaner and its good for another few years. The carbon build up had caused the brushes to stick in their slots.
Interesting what you say about the roller's spheres, what's the issue with them, are they fitted differently to a Citroen? I know when I had my BX they are hand tight only, no more than fitting an oil filter, I had a chain wrench to get a them off. They were only difficult when they'd been fitted by someone who didn't understand how the system worked, and they'd been screwed on by gorillas!

I am using a mobile phone which is awkward for photos.
The issue with the spheres is not fitting them. The spheres are tortured to around 50 ftlb about the same as a wheel nut. These spheres can be split and new diaphragm fitted.
The two halves are held together with a threaded locking ring which is torqued to 350ftlbs. Reports of double that to undo are common.
Note for every quid cheaper the car is than a good one. It will cost 2 quid to repair. So chose cars with great care. Drive the car 50 miles at least. £20 worth of petrol is a cheap way to find out how good a car is. Also go to the Rolls Royce owners club of Australia. They know everything.
Note. When I say the assembles can be repaired I mean proper repair that a RR garage would do. Not a lash up with cable ties holding it together because a tab broke off.
Also I won't sugar coat the 12mpg bit.
The centre section rear bumper is £700.!!
