Porsche 924 engine oil
Re: Porsche 924 engine oil
I'll pop some in the members cars section Rich, when I can bother myself to venture outside and take some piccies in this god awful wind, rain, hail, sleet, general nasty stuff we seem to be having here in Gods Country
Re: Porsche 924 engine oil
Apparently, it's a "weather bomb".
These days, there has to be a label for every bloody thing! We're oop north, it's winter, yet still the tabloid trash posts headlines such as "shock time news: sunrise 9:35am, sunset 2:08pm. Alien intervention suspected." No, it's the north, this is how it works and even at my place down in Northumberland it's dark before 9 and after 3. Though at least it's warm there at the moment, 33F. Lovely.
Carry on....

OOOH a Weather Bomb eh? only a bit of snow today so just a normal winter as you say John.
Had a nasty surprise today from the Porsche though, had it ticking over a good while whilst having a tinker and the bloody thing went and pressurised the cooling system
so it doesn't look like it will be ready for the England trip.....
Ah well, its current owner is picking up the cost, me and my lad will do the work though the head will probably have to be sent off to Auto Head Recon in Inverness for a skim and check. The beauty of actually having a car about for a bit before finalizing the deal at least means I shouldn't be caught by nasty surprises later on. The car is coming in a deal against the Mini, but it needed a couple of little bits doing first which I said I'd do to speed things along as the parts were there.
Glad I caught that one now instead of later. In the meantime I still have the Mini until the Porsche is declared ready and the deal concluded.
Hey Ho, could have been worse

Are you sure it's a HG thing? Slipping water pump impellers can present similar symptoms, IIRC.

Re: Porsche 924 engine oil
Hmm, tell more John,
After running a good while and reaching a little over half way on the temp gauge she started to vent from the header tank blow off tube, quite a bit of steam and a trickle of water. Top hose firm but not solid.
Don't know if the following helps but
If you turn her off then remove the expansion tank cap she empties herself with many glugs and spurts til the system is nearly dry, if you run her up to temp with the cap off she starts gushing like a fountain at about the same time the thermostat would open.
Things to look for / check please, as I'm more an A series man than "refined" things like this

Re: Porsche 924 engine oil
Been tinkering again, Thanks Mr JPB for at least making me stop and think
It currently appears that the problem may well be a combination of a cooling system with an air lock, coupled to a faulty and a dody electric fan sensor switch causing the temp to get a too high. It fooled me yesterday by coming on a couple of times but never came on at all this morning despite the running temp getting halfway between 3/4 and the red on the gauge
We will see, I've bled the cooling system and with the fan wired permanently on it shows no signs of the previous problem.
I'll try changing the switch sensor and see what happens.
Fingers crossed please

Re: Porsche 924 engine oil
If you can't get a replacement sensor fit an over ride switch to the fan. I did that when my Rover100 started over heating when carrying out manouvers on driving lessons. did the trick until I could find time to sort things out. Did the same thing on a Hillman Avenger fitted with an electric cooling fan. Hand book advised fitting a mechanical fan if towing. Didn't want all that faff every time I needed to tow something, If temp gauge showed any rise I just switched the fan on until the temp dropped to normal and never had a problem. Only problem I had with that car was the fan was live and would switch on after turning the engine off. Made one or two fitters jump
Re: Porsche 924 engine oil
Diesel oil is high in detergent but not so that it would damage a petrol engine. I and just about everyone I know that owns an older v8 or 6 cylinder Mercedes Benz gasser uses either Rotella or Delvac. Have so for many years and never had a problem.arceye wrote:Thanks Chaps, 10/40 it will be then![]()
Alabassi mentions diesel engine oil for the ZDDP, appreciate more info on this re any potential problems. Used to be told never to use Diesel Engine oil in a petrol due to the detergents, is it actually ok to do this? Any risks I should be aware of if going that route, any procedures such as an engine flush prior to using it? Or just stick with the normal stuff.
I have actually seen mention on a couple of forums of people using the Diesel Oil in petrol engines, but it seems contrary to what I was always led to believe was ok.
Cheers Chaps

Cheers chaps
All well, then the wiper washer gave up at the MOT station, replaced with new pump and pipe and then she broke down and wouldn't start last night.....
Now just dealing with a couple of fuel pump / fuel line and relay related issues and she will hopefully be good to go. She is back up and running anyway. Its been standing a while and every time it seems to be ready something else gives up
but I think we are about on top of things now.
BTW, anyone know a good source for fuel pump relays for a 1984 N/A 2.0 Porsche, GSF don't have them and there have been some silly prices being asked elsewhere. She currently has a "K.A.E 3.300.300" relay if that helps.

I'm no expert on Porkers, but the one site I saw the correct relay said it had been discontinued and you have to use the later model's version instead (I gather yours had a fuse and the later ones don't). A quick look on eBay showed the later one to be relatively cheap, but it may be getting a little late to get it before Christmas. To save a click or three my search is here:

I don't know how well you are served by the likes of Euro Car Parts etc, but asking for a later one may work. However, some of these parts places need a car reg number before they will sell you a wrong part! My Starion-owning friend had fun getting a n/s strut for his Corsa from ECP - he got home before finding the strut was wrong and, in spite of showing the lad that the next two he had brought out were also RH ones and obviously not the same as the LH one he'd brought with him, the lad still tried to tell him it all three were the correct part!
