Happy to report that my '97 Volvo V40 just flew through another MOT, not even a single advisory. :thumbs:

My old Freelander passed its MOT last month with the advisory "Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine bay" :shock:

Has anyone else seen anything like that before??????

many years ago i had a ford capri fail on being covered in mud & unable to check for rust, (the mud was over an inch thick minimum) once it had its annual jetwash it passed :D

What would the situation have been if you had fitted a bodykit which covered the cills thereby preventing inspection of an important structural component for rust?

The sills on Rover P6s are all hidden behind covers (unless you want to show off your sill welding and unscrew the covers before submitting the car for test), doesn't stop those from passing their annual inspections and sadly, the same is true for bodykits which was handy when the rustier of my Alfa 75s went through the process. :oops:

In the early 90's I had an MOT tester insist that I weld the sill covers on my p6 as they were "only" bolted on :(

No end of discussion would solve the matter so 3 tack welds either side and a revisit with the workshop manual resulted in a pass.

Yup. I get it on mine all the time, my tester just likes to make me worry when it takes a long time to print out the certificate! :lol:

Testers are not allowed to remove any item(s) while doing the test, so plastic arch extensions covering rusty and holed arches are fine, no jagged edges, same on sills, they can't remove them to test the sill so anything covered by them could be as rusty as hell and get a fail if the covers weren't there. The MOT is full of stupid things like that, IE SRS light on, FAIL, SRS light with bulb removed, advisory for non working bulb...

But what is there in the engine bay that he needs to look at anyway?
