if you get a new VW that lives by the sea side, gets driven over unpaved roads and never washed it will rust.
Not unless it's had bad body repairs it won't. Unlike the flaky, badly pickled finish on Reliant Fox and LE93 chassis, the Zinc tends not to come off VAG group stuff.

I live near enough to the sea to count as living by it (on a tidal estuary) and the last Golf (2002 Mk4) certainly didn't suffer much from driving through the dregs left as the tide receeded! I was surprised when the insurance man said it was in excellent condition!

I gather the Mk5s have issues - they ae certainly not as well protected as the Mk4. Mine had rusty crud on the tops of the sills below the front doors. I suspect I should have gone to VW and complained, but I wanted it done quickly and properly! I gather VW were sorting rusty front wings FOC at one time as there was a problem with some sealing foam around the wheel arches - it was too long and held water and muck. They are now reucing the amount they'll pay, so it's probably cheaper to get it done without their "help"

I'll take some pics of the MILs polo. No accident damage as she has had it from new but every wheel arch is rusty. VAG may be better than some but you can't engineer out stone chips.

Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.

Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

I confess the Mk2 Gof and B3(?) Passat had chips around the wheel arches. Newer Golfs (and Passats IIRC) have the flanges folded through 180 deg, so there's little for the stones to hit. The arch liners are much better too - they eventually put them in the back arches as well as the front ones!

I'm not saying VAG are perfect - just that there are some that are worse!

Y plate, so that's what, 2000/01? Not Galvanised that far back and one of the last to receive the treatment as only Audi introduce it on a rolling basis from 1987 and the other companies within the group waited for model breaks which, in the case of the Polo would have been autumn for the 2002/03 model year. But from that point on the 12 year anti-perforation warranty was still in place so anything newer than 2002 is still covered in any case.
More bizarre are the Peugeots of the '90s and 2000s that people were told by dealers were dipped, but weren't and the Fiat Tipo which was Galvanised apart from the inner sills, floors and n/s (UK) inner wings. Nice work, Fiat, protect the bits that weren't at risk to start with! :x

I reckon a FIAT engineer put "X"'s on all the places where they rot to show where they should galvanize them and the Production Team interpreted that as being DON'T do these bits!
