Wooden car floor undersealing?

This is my first post here although I have been a regular reader of the magazine for years. Whilst this isn't a classic car question as such, I hope that there might be an answer out there.

I am building a wooden bodied car based on a Suzuki Jeep chassis from a set of plans. The designer of the car has a long history in this sort of thing but I am not quite sure on one aspect of the build and I am at that point.

He recommends undersealing the plywood floor with a mixture of PVA glue and exterior paint but with my nearly limited experience with wood I feel i would be better off just oiling the floor thus allowing it to breathe and act like wood should.

My question is what did they do with wooden car floors back in the old days?

I would pay the extra and buy whats know as BUFFALO BOARD then it wont need any treatment for many years.

Some people call it trailer board.

My Burlington had a ply floor on a Vitesse chassis . I undersealed it with the shultz gun
