MGB steering

#1 Post by ate1980 »

Hi,

Took the '79 bgt for MOT today and it failed on excessively stiff steering, the tester could not steer the front wheels with his hands when car was in the air. The steering had been idle for at least 4 years, but i did grease the kingpins before the MOT. Any tricks to loosen it up safely ?

Also on the drive there apon hard uphill acceleration there was a cloudy exhaust, fairly light (water?) but soon cleared. Should I be concerned ? Temperature fine.

Thanks for any comments
Andy

Kingpins should be greased every few months.

Some say every 6k miles, but I prefer every 3 months at the least.

You may have some corrosion inside the king pins, so may be best to have the stripped and inspected.
