sticky rear windows

#1 Post by zippot »

The Windows on my Simca are seized up there is a little play but I do not want to force them in case of damage. I have used penetration oil on the mechanism. and will continue to try.
there seems to be some rot one of the guide this could be a issue . and the side runners are made of a type of cloth not rubber. im wondering if the water has caused these to swell trapping them shut there a technique or a product that will realise the glass I don't want to use liquid in case of further swelling.

I would take the door card off and rock the mechanism while watching it to see exactly where it is seized. It could be as simple as dried up grease and a bit of effort will push it through. You could also try having a glamorous assistant putting their hands on each side of the window with the door open and pushing the glass down while you turn the handle. that might be enough extra torque to unstick them :)
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

A few questions if I might:

Does this car use a quadrant with a spring loaded arm that has a roller connecting to a slot under the window channel to raise and lower the drop pane or do these have chains, like Fiats of a certain era?

Which brand of penetrating oil did you try?

Can the frames be unbolted from the door and lifted clear of the glass? If so, then that would be my approach, had the same issue with my Volvo 142S and one of the 144DLs, a few Rebels and Regals too and the issue is that moisture creeps down the felt window channels and gets trapped there, then rust forms inside the channel and that pushes against the back of the channels, pushing them away from their steel backing and jamming the drop panes, so giving the impression that the quadrants have seized when it's more likely the fault of those window channels. Clever Volvo made the window frames part of the door itself for the 240. The clever part being that the channels were totally different and didn't swell in the same way.

If rusty window frames are the cause, there are specialists who make replicas from stainless, fitted with harder felt seals than the original ones, obviously this is only of use to you if the Simca's frames come off.

windows have a channel connected to the bottom of the window glass and a kind of angled bar that raises when its wound up. I cant see how to take the runners off.
I think that i may try someone holding the glass whilst i wind and lube the channels with some silicon spray.
cheers for the advice.

Take the door cards off and get a hair dryer in there for a few mins to gently warm the mech up, may help free up and hardened grease, whilst the cards are off you can have a good look for corroded mechanisms, if parts are too hard to see try using a digital camera on video record,
