Hi , repairing the sills and arches on my MX5.
Where I have used a flap wheel to prep the metal for welding, I removed the factory stone chip/underseal stuff.
Not the repair is done I need to level the surface with some stonechip/underseal stuff.
I got some Hammerite white stuff from Halfords, but even after 5 thick coats its still no where near thick enough to bring it level with the factory stuff.
Can someone recommend a super thick stone chip that comes in a aerosol can and will give that original stippled finish?
Cheers!
Thick Underseal Recommendations?
Re: Thick Underseal Recommendations?
The temptation here is to use the old-fashioned oil-based Schutz type underseal - however anybody who's ever had the job of removing it will probably agree with me that it's the work of the devil and should be avoided, plus it doesn't work all that well anyway.
I've had this problem before on a modern car, and I still think that what you've done with conventional anti stone-chip paint is the way to go - put loads on, if you have a ridge where it meets the factory stuff, use a sanding block or a knife to angle down the edge so that it blends in better, or just put up with it. So long os you've got a decent thickness of stone chip paint on there, and it's on a base of decent primer then it will do its job, and other than the above I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I answer to your question I've never come across anything that is good to use but goes on as thick as factory underseal, so just do the best you can.
Cheers!

Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Ive been using stonechip over primer and then a coat of black schutz underseal over that on my P6. However I'm spraying on virgin surfaces so far, just starting on the underneath. Have to redo some crap work by the welder who did my sills. The blinking things are already rusting on the surface and the car hasn't even been back on the road!

Stone chip applied using a compressor and schultz gun gives a very similar finish to the original Mazda one. where it joins the old you need to feather the edge of the original paint and blend in ovver the top.
