Headbolt torque talk

#1 Post by zipgun »

Gotta be quick answers , i'm going to do it as soon as the rain stops ! Cinquecento head gasket.. Torque to 22ft lb stage one, bolts 12345678 ok? Then 90 degrees stage 2 , then another 90 degrees . Right ,during 1st stage , do you torque just the once, because by the time you get to bolt 8 , bolt 1 is somewhat slacker than the 22 ft lb it was tightened to already. Should they all be 22 ft lb before stage two , do you go round 2nd time before stage 2?

I'd go round twice.

Likewise, I usually go round twice. Only takes a couple more minutes eh?

Cheers! :D
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Thats good ,coz thats what i just did !
I got this 899cc Cinq 4 years ago at 29k for 120 quid with a blown HG . Picked it up at 9am , took it to bits, took the head down and had it skimmed , all back together by 1pm. Its since done another 30 thousand , just blown the HG again .Only slight misfire upon starting ,last couple of days . I did torque twice first time i did it , before stage two and three...Anyway all back together now, seems honky dory :P :P ..

Actually...........

Say your torque setting is 75 lb/ft for the head bolts. I'd probably do 60 lb/ft twice. You know the head will be down and evenly flat, then do 75 lb/ft just the once to finish the job.
