Pre sorn

#1 Post by zipgun »

Didn't want to hijack the "Is there anyway to trace an old car?" thread..so . Whats the crack with a car thats been off the road since BEFORE sorn came in ?
My mate has his old car resting  for a while now, but since it now appears to have been a "Works" car ,it needs / its going to be sorted out . V5 is in his name still.. He has no intention of selling it, just restore it for highdays and trackdays reliving his yoof ;) Do you just ask for a red v5 to be sent out? The reg.no. comes up on dvla site as unlicenced.

It is as simple as filling in a V62 and sending it in with a £25 cheque.
they write to the previous keeper and see if they respond.
no response, you get a v5 posted out to you in 5/6 weeks.

If it's been off the road since before SORN and the V5 is in his name, then there's no need to do anything till it goes back on the road. At that time he can just tax it in the normal way. After that, if it's taken off the road again, he'll have to declare SORN.

But if it's the old style log book, you'll have to send it back to request a new style one. It will be a simple case of just sending it back, they should send a new style one out by return.

Just remember that if its now tax exempt, the log book may still show it as PLG not Historic as its been off the road so long!
Just make sure that you let them know if it exempt is when you tax it at the post office, they can then deal with sending the V5 in to be updated!
At least they did with one of mine a few years ago!
