When I grew a little too big, to squeeze into the rear seats, of my father's first MGB GT V8 (Not that I ever complained) and he went for more space, he kind of overdid it, with a Volvo 245DL (We'd looked at an Alfa GTV, Reliant Scimitar GTE, Jensen Interceptor and a BMW 2002). After the V8, it was (If I'm honest) a tad boring but it was very comfortable, very roomy (For such a big car, it had an amazing turning circle) and much better made than the MG. We took the opportunity to do a camping trip to Scotland, which would have been out of the question in the V8 (I reckon the Volvo had more space than the V8 and my mother's VW Beetle put together). In ten days, we did 2000 miles.
If I could have changed anything on the Volvo, I reckon the optional overdrive would have been good and perhaps twin carbs, just to give it a little extra urge. It was as good an estate car as you'll get.

^^^ Yes the DL was as basic a spec as they did. Only a 4-speed box too. The 2.3 is the one to have, GLT probably the K-jet mech injection, later EFI with Cat sapped on the mediocre umph.
Mine is 2.0ltr K-jet so not as umphy in 'standard' as they can be. There is a chap on the volvo forum in the process of putting a T5 engine into a 245
. Getting to the end of it (ish) now too.

you can put the injectors, turbo and control system from a focus ST on to one of those to make it really shift...........

I Think you'd need one of the later 'SE' or Torslanda model models with LH electronic injection and ECU etc. Otherwise you have a load of wiring headaches

A turquoise Citreon DS went past the shop this afternoon. It's a long time since I saw one of those on the road.

And this morning a white (B reg, so 1964) MGB has just gone past. It looked in nice shape, though it's too nice a day to have the hood up

That's very late for a Morris badged one isn't it? I thought that they would all have been Austins after the Marina van came along? Plenty of Minor fetishists here to keep me right though.

And as an anorak, I'd be failing if I didn't question the use of the skinnier saloon, Traveller and 6cwt commercial wheels on an 8cwt version. Maybe owners of the passenger carrying varieties have pinched all of the wider ones to make their cars look better. which they do, IMHO.
