Right.

So my friend Paul came over last night, after huge amount of p155 taking. He made it clear i would never live this down and come Le-Mans this year i would indeed be a laughing stock... -However it has turned out i am vindicated. :D

Paul checked all my settings and found everything to be 100% correct, ok i made a few minor blunders (due to inexperience), however it should have run. He then started to check a little deeper and found that even though i had the timing correct (as per Jaguars official workshop manual) it seemed to be 180 degrees out!!!
But, this is where it gets odd, everything i did was correct...

So the distributor was removed and it seems like the nice men at the machine shop had put the dog tooth drive 180 diffidently / wrong compared to the Jaguar Manual. As i had no idea the dizzy dog drive is left off set (22D6 Dizzy only fits one way), i didn't know this could be wrong / different. As i followed the manual to the letter i had no way of knowing this was the problem. (so 1 was firing on its exhaust stroke and 6 was doing the same!)
Paul said to reverse the leads on the dizzy and everything would work... In the mean time the Dizzy electrical connector tab broke so we had to mend that..

the engine started first time at midnight, first press of the button and after about 1 second on the starter which is very unusual for a Jaguar!!!!!

So, its running, i am disappointed the machine shop built the £3K engine differently from the book, however it is very minor, if everything else is ok i'll be happy. It sounded great, didne leak at all in the 2-3 minutes it was running. Now i just need to tune the carbs, put the gearbox oil in (20/50) and get that MOT after i change the front shockers!! :ugeek:

Thankyou all who suggested (pryantcc thankyou for your dogged detirmination). I have learned that even if you are correct, does not mean the people before you were!!!!

Wohoo! Great news S-type!!! I was concerned I had done the same when re-assembling my Alvis engine as I paid no attention to which way the distributor drive was when I took it out. However, Lady luck was looking out for me & it all worked when I put it back together!
I'm sure the whole performance has been a great education & forced you to find out all the stuff you didn't know before-hand.
Happy motoring to you! :-)

Hi, nice looking Jag. Can you let me know who did your engine rebuild, looking into getting the engine done on my Jag project.
Thanks

Classic and Modern, they were formally XRN, but when XRN moved they split. Read all about it on his site.

http://www.classic-and-modern-engine-services.co.uk/

His base price for an XK rebuild is £2000 (new pistons, springs, valves etc etc). Something like mine with a full balance, modern rear crank seal, etc is more...

I am now driving the car and its dropping 1 single drop of oil sometimes when i park (like overnight), which I am well pleased with. The only mistake they made was putting the dizzy dog tooth in 180 degrees out, other than that I have no complaints.
He makes engines for Lynx kit cars, he also had the pink Flyod chaps Ferrari on the bench when i was there. Go visit him, i was very impressed when he showed me 2-3 XK engines he was doing in various states of build. From full race to standard. He priced everything up front for me...

He promised me photos which he never took, he lost track of the bits i gave him. So make sure you list and agree what you give him, he also temporarily lost a bit I gave him to polish, but he found it and did free delivery on my engine (anyway). Only minor points.

Paul is a genuinely nice guy, don't be put off by his slightly "engineer" demeanour, he does care and gets the job done, he's just not fluffy like VSE. His spec was mush better than VSE but for less cash. I also found too many horror stories about VSE, although when i spoke to them they were very kind and if i hadn't found C&M i would have used them.

I will use him again when i build my supercharged Hearse XK engine project. :D

You won't get a better endorsement of a service than that!
