Getting a restored 1980's Italian BMW back on the road

Hi Folks

I've owned, restored, raced several E30 BMW's over recent years. Most recently I have been building a E30 320is from a collection of parts that don't come with any associated history. For those who may not be 100% up on the BMW's the E30 320is is a bit special as it was a version of the M3 built especially for the Italian and Portuguese markets, some more info here http://www.bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=10

Now the meat of the matter! The car was initially restored as a race car so the lack of a V5 etc wasn't a concern however I dont really have the time or inclination to compete any more so I would like to put it on the road. http://www.vin-info.com provides a small amount of history on the chassis but looking at the V55/5 document I really want a "certificate of conformity". The problem there is this car dates from 1988.05 and was registered in Italy so, the COC doesnt exist as such and BMW keep pushing me to Italy where "They no speak English" or at least don't want to do any leg work for me.

With all that in mind I was wondering if folks here have much experience in putting non UK registered chassis back on the road and had any advise for me before I end up giving up on my wish to drive the car on the road

when i register cars in France i contact the head office of ford in france etc for the certificate of conformity which costs usually about €150 (ford) €500 Iveco... bmw uk should be able to sort this easily for you.

Alternatively try a club. If you go to the DVLA website and download form V765/1 you will find a list of all the club officials who can provide this information.

The COC doesnt exist for a car of this age or I would go that route.
I have however had a productive call with a very nice man from Park Lane BMW classics work shop who is going to send me the info he can get from both his systems and any from the archive team in Germany he is going to ask.
I may well then take these bits to the official BMW car club and see if they can fill in any gaps.
