Hi all
My recently acquired 1959 Ford pop has a charging problem. I suspect the regulator / cut out is shot, and thought I'd ask about on this board....
The car won't charge the battery, so I checked the dynamo. Noting come out of that. A strip down, clean up and the brushes sliding properly resulted in
around 10v out put at fast idle. Revving the engine took it to around 28v / 30v steady. I reconnected the cabling back to the Regulator / Cut out (observing the correct way to wire up the dynamo to the regulator). Still no charge.
I popped the lid on the regulator / cut out. The wiring around one of the solenoids looks t have unravelled. The top of the armature (at the point the solenoid pulls it in) was corroded with what looks like white powder. Non of the adjuster screws have been touched (the sealing paint is still intact). When the engine is run at slow idle, nothing happens. At fast idle (ie around 10 volts or more) still nothing happens. I guess the solenoids should start acting at fast idle (ie 1000 RPM or more). I[ve checked the Regulator / Cut out earthling to the chassis and its good.
I am concluding that the Regulator / Cut out has given up ?
Is there anything else I should look at ?
Cheers

Re: Ford Pop Charging...
You're looking in the right place, IMHO, so I'd be trying a known, good regulator next and see whether that cures the fault. I suspect that it will.
