Dynamo service

#1 Post by poolystan »

HI , I've just bought a spare dynamo for my 1965 MG Magnette Mk IV. It is a Lucas C 40 type, I have bought some new brushes to fit and the bearing seems ok. My car has been changed to negative earth at some stage in its past, if I fit this dynamo at some point will it work ? What I mean is will the dynamo need to be changed to negative earth somehow ?, if so how do I go about it ? thanks stan

It will work, if you don't know whether it's already for negative earth fitting you can flash the field coil (F) terminal to the battery earth post (disconnected!) for a few seconds and that'll take care of the polarity.

As an aside; be very gentle when you go to replace the brush holder end of the generator, that monkey metal will be very brittle by now and I have two broken carriers from cars of mine to demonstrate how brittle they've become with age and constant exposure to temperature change. I've done these many times and was careful, they still cracked.
