You think right. The engine will start regardless of the inhibitor if you use a starting handle, or if it has a rear pump, and you tow it, for which it has to be in gear.suffolkpete wrote: A thought has occurred to me. I thought the inhibitor only disabled the starter motor and it is still possible to start the engine with the handle. I remember that my late father's Magnette Automatic, with a BW35 'box, had a notice attached to the starting handle warning of the dangers of handle starts when in gear.

Very late reply, but thought i would post an update, the number plate lamp was a poor earth after all, seemed to light up for all of 2 seconds when i got someone else to turn the lights in so i could see and then blanked (temporary bodge fitted and has held well so far!), Only managed to get it in for an MOT last week due to have some issues with the carb, but all resolved. It was quite a pleasing result failed on just a small (penny sized) hole in the sill, a small tear in one brake hose and the seal for the fuel cap, all in all i hope she will be road legal within a month!!!
