A question of age on the Chrysler/Dodge Neon

#1 Post by Mitsuru »

Here is a question which I think will intrege you.
The MK 1 Neon was produced in January 1994 for the 1995 market as the
Americans put it, and yet went on sale in 1994.

Now if you ask anyone who has one of these particular cars they will tell you
it was a 1995 and not a 1994. Yet if the car was manufactured in 1994 and
sold in 1994, so surely it would be a 1994 car, and be classified as such?

The question of when it first went into production has often crossed my mind.
Especially when you think of when that model car might be classed as a classic
in the eyes of the insurance companies and such!

The Americans refer to the model year (which is the best part of a year later than the build year), Brits refer to the year of build and/or registration. If you register an American car in the UK the DVLA will almost certainly go by the year of manufacture when assessing what plate to issue.

Not that it really matters - whenever it was made, the Neon is a 1980s car its execution :) (that pretty much applies to all American cars - 10 years behind Europe)

I have just been informed that the neon started production in late 1993,
and there was over 4,000 made by the end of that year.

So tat is proof positive that they were produced in 1993.
And it will celebrate it's 20th Birthday in about 9 months!
Question now is how many of the 1993 are left?
Is it a Classic yet?
