Some Winter photos (post your own)

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Some Winter photos (post your own)

#1 Post by Mitsuru »

Here are some photographs taken by putting my hand with the mobile
phone out the wind of Dad'0s Landrover Discovery when travelling back
from dropping mothers volvo off at the garage.

The road in the map below, B1281 (Hesleden Road) starting coming off
the A19 and down the B1281 down to Blackhall Rocks.

Image

We used the road to get onto the A19 to go down to Thornaby to drop
the Volvo off. And that was an hour and a half before these photographs
were taken, and the road was clear not a drop of snow in sight!

In the abow photo, the van in the distance has just made it up an S-bend
on a hill which by thwe time we got there, there was a van trying to claw
it's way up the bank but ended up drifting across and back down it. We
only just squeezed passed as we slid down the bank!

Here is the top part of that bend.

And back up the other side.

It's pretty snow free around here (On the higher levels there is a dusting and I expect if I went to the top of the Brecon Beacons, at 2906 feet, I'd find a bit more). You have to watch for the ice and as a cyclist, I'll be glad to see March (Even if that is a prelude to six months of pigs poo). We do sometimes get falls and home (Tredegar), at 1000 feet, is nore prone to it than the shop, which being down in the Usk valley, is only 400 feet. The Usk valley goes up the east side of the industrial valleys and then north west along the tops of them but it is much shallower, so whilst the shop is 30+ miles from the sea, it is still 600 feet below my house, which is barely 25 miles from the sea (The hills between rise to 1700).

The "Heads of the Valleys" (In which Tredegar finds itself) can be harsh, as this photo of 1947 shows. This photo was taken at Dowlais Top, above Merthyr Tydfil and shows a jet engine being used to clear the snow from the railway. I can't make out whether it's the Abergavenny or the Brecon line, which crossed at this point but both lines are long gone, though http://www.breconmountainrailway.co.uk/ runs over part of the old Brecon line.

During that Winter, my grandfather had to take refuge in a railway hut a couple of miles from this point. He spent the night in it (Lit the stove and cooked some of the shopping he had with him) and walked home the next morning, where a single decker bus was buried outside the house.

The snow has come in this morning and below is a photo taken outside the shop at 9.30. There were about 6cm standing at the time. It's giving local radio something to get exited over (Other than just the self styled "Welsh Government" and nationalism/rugby  ) .......doesn't really compare with my previous photo and there are no buried buses. I am however glad I got the car back from the paint shop on Wednesday.

Thanks Terry, I would guess that's a 4-pot version. I was very tempted by one when I bought the smaller DB, the only problem was that someone had butchered its bonnet (and put an alternator on). The engine was beautifully smooth though - better than the Mk4 Golf's diesel!

We are unfortunate in our corner of Cumbria - about five flakes of snow the other night (I could only tell because it froze where the ground had been wet before the frost set in) and, about a week ago, there was a dusting of snow that didn't even turn the grass white! So I have nothing to moan about!!

I can't even moan about the digger's welding job - a bloke sorted it for me last week for a very reasonable £60!

Ah yes, I can moan - there's an 'orrible green thing spoiling your photo ;)

I don't know what engine is in it i'm afraid. I will look when I am in the yard tomorrow.
I'm surprised nobody has identified the yellow (not a factory colour) thing on the other side of the pic though.

There are lots of Deeres and Fastracs in the farm yard which come and go as they wear out but the 2 old David Browns go on and on and on!
