MGB.GT. 1978.

#1 Post by Radar11047 »

I have owned the above car for around 10 years now, during which time I have carried out a rolling restoration. The engine has been fitted with an unleaded head, new coil, electronic ignition and a new Kenlowe fan. The car starts first time, every time but recently after running for 20 to 30 minutes, the engine begins to run like a bag of nails and then cuts out. It refuses to start again, until it has cooled down and then the cycle is repeated. The fan has been adjusted correctly and does cut in as it is supposed to. Any ideas as to what might be causing this annoying fault?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

IMHO the first thing you need to do is to check what's missing when it fails - spark or fuel. When it's good and hot and has failed, test for a spark (I assume you know how to do this) and if you're getting a good regular spark check that there's a good fuel supply to the carbs - let us know how that goes and take it from there.

If I was guessing I'd say that you have a faulty coil or electronic ignition module, but that'd be guessing, if it were my car I'd do some basic definitive diagnosis as above.

Cheers! :D

Rotor arm - I would not be surprised if your rotor arm is losing its insulating prperties when warm, causing it to short out the igntion. Once it cools again it's OK. Lots of the black rotor arms in crculation are like this - and even new ones can be faulty (I had a brand new Lucas one be faulty right ou of the box).

Sounds like the ballast resistor on later models.
