For the benefit of anybody else on the forum who has a car with a 14CUX ECU, I found this last night: http://alum.wpi.edu/~colinb/14cux.html
Someone has written a piece of software to talk to the ECU and give you all the diagnostic information in real time. No more expensive fault code readers.
I have just ordered a £14 serial adapter that can handle 12 volts from ebay (as suggested in the article), downloaded some free software and FINALLY i should be able to go for a run and see what is suddenly making my car run rich and idle like a bag of spanners.
Hopefully this will help someone else too
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.
Just a note that this software works perfectly. Life output from all the sensors and the ability to log them all is damn handy.
Found that when VERY hot my fuel temp sensor stopped feeding back.
Hasn't fixed my crappy idle problem but at least i know it isn't electronic now.
