Electric/HVLP spray guns

On the old forum there was a few threads asking about these things and after buying october 2005 back issue of PC I decided to buy a apollo spray mate from hvlp shop to spray a few bits with. I have to say its excellent its as noisy as a hoover, hardly any overspray, and has given me a cracking finish after just a few coats. I'd happily use it to respray the whole car. I'm having a go on ome beetle wings at the moment using some marine enamel which is also working really well, it's really tough aslong as you leave it to dry for 24hrs or so between coats. Just thought I'd share my experiences

They are excellent. I used one to spray my Herald coupe - outdoors - and it made an excellent job of it. I sprayed my Herald Estate indoors with a gun and the fog was terrible... I'd use the HVLP every time.

I've got a Wagner branded HVLP gun I bought from Bunnings (like B&Q) ex-display in a damaged box for 50% discount. I've used it a lot. I had a Mini painted professionally and later redid one panel with the HVLP gun. Nobody could tell which panel I redid myself.

I plan on getting one of these myself after getting charged through the roof for a second rate spray job by a soo called professional
The Cost of resprays is now getting really daft

I Sprayed some panels on Boris with custom mixed aerosols and the finish was better than the so called professional job it recieved later on

However the standard off the shelf cans are often poor quality paint and really poor colour matches

And the custom mixed cans from proper automotive paint factors though good quality and decent colour match are often around £15 for a third of a litre can

HVLP Sprayers have to be a win win situation

You can get a better finish,cover larger areas,and often buy a litre of paint for not much more than a custom aerosol

I wouldnt like to paint a whole car continuously with a HVLP but a panel at a time from the same batch/mix of paint theres no reason why you cannot achieve better than bodyshop results in some cases and spray a whole shell in sections

Theres Lots of makes Apollo,Wagner,Bosch,Earlex some of which feature proper metal guns

Have a go i say i know ill be buying one sometime this year

yeah I use one for primer work, it's quick easy and I got it from B&Q!! A pro one.. but it was the one with a metal gun not the plastic rubbish..

This thread really interests me. I have a 60 gallon compressor which I use for painting and more then keeps up with my gun. But it gets quite foggy and noisy and it's obviously not portable.

What do you guys budget for when you buy these? Can you shoot base / clear?

I am sure you can but I only use it for primers..as I am not too bothered abit finsih as I am sanding most of it off anyway..

I use a Sata Jet gun for my top coats and they are the dogs bits.. on a 150ltr tank paint.. and run out the door with my mask. Leave to clear the room..
