Re: Austin 1100 Auto box changing too early
Before I bought Walter I was talking about the autos with my old mechanic & was therefore forewarned about the speedy upshifts - it wounds weird & not what you expect when compared to other cars, but it's what's expected of those extraordinary AP units. Walter was also a pig when cold, not because he'd shift too soon but because he wouldn't pick up revs at all, but I just used the same method as you; it only made a difference on very cold mornings, any other time he was fine.

Re: Austin 1100 Auto box changing too early
I have a Moke with a 1990 Metro 1275 and Auto in it.
I can confirm that shortening the rod does alter the shift speed to be higher in the rev range.
I adjusted mine too short once and it would not shift into fourth gear until 70kph (3,000rpm) even under very light throttle.
There is a hole in the linkage down near the diff and a corresponding hole in the casing. The manual says you are supposed to insert a 1/4" rod through the two to align them and then adjust from there. If you get stuck I can scan the relevant page of the manual.
Whatever you do, use a non-sythetic 20W-50 oil that is SG rated. Anything more modern kills the gearbox pretty quickly.
Cheers,

Oh and don't back-flush to clean out the oil, you could do irreparable harm!
