What happened to....

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

What happened to....

#1 Post by JPB »

.....the forum? It currently looks like a text page and has lost all of its formatting, bar emoticons which are still visible:

I also tried viewing it with Chrome and Safari as well as a colleague's machine, running something called "Windows 7" :x :? which does exactly the same so it's not my device.

Qu'est-ce qui se passe?

Still the same here, all other sites are rendering normally, this is on my own machines, the network terminals at work and a random sample of students' laptops, some of which are running various windows versions as well.
Same on all browsers, including some I've seen for the first time this afternoon. :?

The only thing I can think of is that you're sitting behind some sort of firewall or proxy that is examining web pages for naughty sites and mangling them in the process. The very word "forum" used to send the thought police at my former employer into a panic. Are images still being rendered? Where's Terry when you need him :)

Well I have no idea what was happening, but things returned to normal about an hour ago and have been fine ever since.
It's definitely nothing to do with the firewalls on the LA's servers or my personal laptop would have been OK since I was using an HSDPA connection on this and not pinching wireless from work. No Ma'am, not in any way. Honestly. :|

I couldn't imagine working anywhere that prevented my doing my rounds of the fora when the day's real work has been done so from about 9:30 onwards then....

 Coincidences, can't say that I believe in them much, so imagine my surprise when these here banner ads for vintage tyres (sorry Rich, not a Longstone ad :( ) appeared and the new masthead started to appear on the forum in the same style as the one on the cover of our magazine.

Could the admins have been adjusting these settings between the same times as the formatting went awry? ;)

Not Guilty!

Well, I am guilty for the banner ad but as i added that about 30 minutes ago i can't claim responsibility for your odd looking display. It isn't anything I have seen before so i can't offer you a solution. I blame chrome for corrupting your entire network ;). It's possible if you have a network proxy there was a corrupt copy on there.

 That's Chromium from the Ubuntu repository with the more colourful icon from the genuine article added for effect  , but there's the thing, that machine was, like I said, on a high speed mobile connection at the time, others were connected to the LA's wireless network, the same effect was observed on many machines (OK, twelve, have you ever tried to lure students away from their social networking sites - in the interests of research - during working hours?) that day and there wasn't a foil hat anywhere to be seen.

So what's with the ad then? Have all of the admin guys been bribed with free rubber for their old motors? :D
