ford anglia macpherson strutts

#1 Post by fordfan »

Hello All,
I recently bought a set of replacement strutt inserts for my 105e from the owners club, after stripping down the old strutts I slid in the replacement inserts which came with two sizes of threaded retaining rings, the problem I have is that the shorter threaded nut is too short,ie the new strutt insert sits slightly proud of the bottom tube and I can't get the thread started but the longer one is too long and I run out of thread in the bottom tube before the nut tightens down.what I need to know is would it be safe to put a couple of large washers between the top of the nut and strutt insert or should I get the longer nut shortened a bit on a lathe for example? I can't really hacksaw a bit off as the thread is so fine I'm sure I would muck it up and i also dont want to risk damaging the old thread in the strutt tube.I know this sounds a bit complicated but I'm sure anybody who has replaced a strutt insert will know what I'm talking about.

Cheers Keith.

If the strut inserts don't fit and allow you to close the nut at the piston end until it's holding the strut insert firmly and is also within sight of the end of the thread on both the sleeve and the nut itself, then could it be that the struts you have are in fact 123E/307E ones and not 105E struts at all?
I don't know whether the difference is in their length but that might be worth checking.
