The Titanic thread...

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

2:20am The Titanic's broken off stern section settles back into the water briefly before tilting high into the air and slowly sinks into the sea, over 1500 people are left stranded in the water. Only 1 boat returns to pick up survivors, after the 'screams have died down'. They pull 7 people out of the water but by dawn 4 are dead.

3.30 Carpathia arrives at the scene to rescue passengers. The last survivour to board is 2nd officer Lightoller, the highest ranking crew member to survive. He board via boat 12 which rescued him from the overturned collapsible B during the night.

Over 1500 people die in the disaster.

I think that's wrong about the port/starboard thing, anything bigger than a yacht has had wheel steering for over 1,000 years and "hard to starboard" has never meant "turn to port" but I don't want to pollute the thread with an argument as it really doesn't matter to me - this is 'kin brilliant - thanks SO much for posting it all, it's much appreciated.

Are you going to finish the story with what happened to the survivors etc.? I hope so!

Cheers mate and thanks a lot :D :D

I wont be doing any more unfortunately. After it sank the timeline is a bit sketchy and also researching what happened to prominent individual survivors, then the enquiries etc is too exhaustive to post here, and I don't want to love valuable MG time :)

Basically the rescue ship Carpathia arrived with survivors at New York on the 18th April, the same day charter ships were sent out from Halifax to retrieve bodies.

Glad you like the car; it's a very useful little runabout and nice to drive. The building is the mill where the Mayday call was received. The photo was taken on a classic car run in July 2009 (You can tell it's July by the weather   ) and is the only one I have of the Mill. However, a bit more searching has resulted in a bit more info on the mill - http://www.walesdirectory.co.uk/tourist ... s10163.htm.
