Mother has set her heart on a Volvo Estate
(& I'm trying to steer her to get an automatic to make it easier for her)
Here are some details let me know if it should be scrapped or sold as
spares or repair?

1600cc Zetec engine
5 speed manual transmission
Factory CD Stereo with code
Air Conditioning (which works)

mid and rear exhaust sections replaced
New Brake pads and shoes
List of Repairs the escort estate needs for MOT.
Holes in n/s sill

Front Brake pipe/hose connection not secure
Rear Bumper needs replacing/repairing due to reversing into post
Front bumper needs replacing/repairing as of minor bump

mother mounts the curb

Seriously? Weigh the thing in and maybe salvage any decent trim parts before it goes over the bridge then whack those on eBay to pay for a decent Volvo.

I'd agree unless she can get a better offer as a PX on the Volvo! Even repaired I'd have thought you're only talking the £500/900 range...
Get her lessons in not going up kerbs as well... might get more miles from the tyres as well as a bonus!

Re: Before motherdecides to scrap her car!!!
Personally I would weigh that in. Late escorts are worth next to nothing and a quick look on autotrader shows ones with an MOT for £500.
Or if it still has enough ticket left to drive it to a dealer you'll probably be able to get £1000 part exchange on it.

Trouble with that otherwise perfectly logical suggestion is that you'd probably pay that much more for the car that you buy if it comes from a dealer.

Get the Ford weighed in, buy a yellow paper, a Gazette, a NE Autotrader and any other sources of classified ads, find the same car in there for less cash. Job done.

Re: Before motherdecides to scrap her car!!!
Step 1: find how much it will cost to get it through an MOT
Once you have done that, you'll know if it's worth repairing. If it's not too expensive, you have a chance to save up a bit of cash towards a new car (and have some value in the old one). However, if it's going to be more than the car's value, don't mess about - weigh it in (our neighbour got £200 for a Scimitar last week and a similar amount for a Passat).
Apparently, the last Escorts were built to a much higher standard - Ford were going to build Jags in the factory, so part of the training was to build Escorts to Jaguar standards!
One thing worth thinking about is VED - I don't know how much the desired Volvo would cost, but it's work checking as the savings can be quite significant these days (my Golf diesel's tax was £135 at the end of last month, but I would be thinking of something like a Polo/Fiesta/Ka if I was swapping it - the neighbour's last Ka cost £35 to tax - and some newer ones are free!)

Re: Before motherdecides to scrap her car!!!
Out of interest, what is the going "weigh in" rate for a scrap car these days?
I have a 1993 3 Series that lost its water yesterday, I think its just a bleed screw that popped but if not i might see if i'll get more from the scrappy for it and then sell the new tyres!

Even among weighbridge operators there must be one born every minute.
