Speedo head or cable

#1 Post by Minxy »

OK so I went for a spin in the Minx today and the speedo is getting worse. When I (eventually ) get up to what I estimated to be round 45 -50 the speedo is swinging from around 20 to off the clock @ 80/90  So any idea is likely to be the head or cable? Not something I ever came across in my days working on cars.

Hairspring. The one in my Rebel came adrift from where it's anchored on the inside of the movement, resoldering the end of the spring cured the problem.

Here's a picture, the bit circled in red is the anchored end of the spring:

If it continues as it is but doesn't worsen, that'll be the trouble. If it vacillates for a few days more then stops recording entirely, look at the gearbox end of the cable, it may be broken or rounded there.

I'd check the cable anyway, withdraw it from the head end and lightly grease it, except for the two inches nearest the head. When replacing it, make sure the connection to the head is done up tightly.
