Re: Computer problem
How's your problem going minxy? Have you had any luck getting your PC back in action?

Not yet because Im not where it is till the weekend and even then I need to find the time, I'm sure you guys would do it in a mater of minutes but for someone who 'dosnt do computers' it will almost certainly take some time and a couple of attemps. I'll keep you posted

Re: Computer problem
Update;
I did as Terry suggested, started in safe mode, went to 'start up' and deleted a couple of things not obviously recognizable (Thats not to say they shouldnt have been there but they went anyway
) Then restarted. I then downloaded a free malware product that scanned and came up with no problems detected ? I then ran a scan with the McAfee which again was clear.
I turned off the computer and then started it as normal and it appears to work fine.
So am I safe now? any other suggestions to be certain? anywhere I could check to see if anything is 'lurking'........or am I being paranoid
P.S thanks for the help, its genuinely appreciated.

Re: Computer problem
Did you just uncheck the items from your startup or did you delete them?
If you unchecked them then you can run msconfig again and look at the path to where the file is, browse there with "my computer" and delete the file it was running.
Then you are safe.
I would also suggest deleting everything in c:\windows\temp
c:\documents and settings\%username%\local settings\temp OR C:\Users\Terry\AppData\Local\Temp
The windows one is generic, documents and settings for 2000 / xp and users for vista / 7.
They are common places for poorly written malware to go plus they are always full of junk so emptying them will free up some space.

Re: Computer problem
Hi Terry
Its windows 7 by the way
No I deleted a couple of items, as I say they were perhaps meant to be there - I dont know
When I click start-up now the only two items showing are McAfee and NETGEAR.
I'm struggling with the other advice though ! I do start / computer / if I click on documents I get documents library...then I'm lost
Sorry I just dont do computers

Re: Computer problem
I wouldn't worry too much. If it's working OK now then you have removed the correct shortcut that was calling it at startup. Job done.
