Gentry kitcar springs

#1 Post by BillyBean »

Hi,

Can anyone please help me to identify these springs from my old Gentry kitcar?
It has a 1.6 Pinto engine, ford 4 speed gearbox but an MGB rear axle.
Oh yes, and Spitfire front suspension!

They look like MK1/MK2 escort from pictures I have seen, so if you just happen to have one lying around in the garage, could you please check out the sizes for me, or maybe suggest an alternative car?

Pictures not showing here.....
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Thanks John.

Well, first impressions is that they look VERY like MG Midget springs - but then I would say that! Although I think Midget springs are a little narrower, so other guess (especially as you say it has MGB rear axle) would be MGB springs!

Don't have time to go and measure mine, but they do look very similar indeed.

Hi Luxobarge,

Thanks for your suggestion, but they are definitely not MGB, that was my first guess too.
These are narrower and lighter than those, so Midget is a possibilty as the car is quite light on the back end.
I will try to find dimensions of Midget ones.

Anyone know of a spring chart based on size?

Hi John,

Well I've just been into the garage for a grovel on the floor under my car, and the Midget springs are in fact 1.5" wide, and about 32" between the mounting centres (under load, but again this is only an approximate measurement)

So I'd say they are looking like Midget ones exept for the length - you really need to have a more accurate easurement of the length on Midget springs, I can't be confident of the measurement I took. But the width looks right!
